How It All Began
Long Beach Shavings Co. is a family business co-founded in 1926 by Russell Price. Two years later, he became the sole owner of Long Beach Shavings, and made his 10 – 12 cu ft bales of shavings from the local lumber mill. Since hay was the primary source of horse bedding at the time, Russell had the bale of wood shavings made from a hay baler and wrapped in paper. He would then load his bales of shavings onto a very small flatbed trailer, and drive all around the Los Angeles area, selling his shavings to feed stores for .50 cents a bale.
We have come a long way since then. Modern drying, screening, vacuuming and baling machinery and techniques are now used to make a bale of shavings. Excellent customer service is also very important to us. Our long-term success is based on uncompromising dedication to the highest standards in quality and customer satisfaction. When a customer orders a trailer load of one of our products, we immediately bale them, load them, and deliver their product to them in a matter of days. Our customers know that they are getting top quality shavings and excellent customer service. Long Beach Shavings has several divisions besides our corporate office and warehouse in Long Beach, CA to better serve our customers’ need. We have divisions in Washington: Premium Pak, Texas: Tex Pak, and multiple divisions in the Northwest: Premium Pine, Pellet Pak, ThoroughBed and Pro Pick. With these regional plants and an extensive trucking fleet, Long Beach Shavings has the ability to distribute our products locally, nationally, and worldwide.
In 1997 Jack Price, son of Russell Price, took over the family business and has been the President and Owner of Long Beach Shavings ever since. He saw the potential to help others, grow a business, and follow in his father’s footsteps. Jack, along with his children, grandchildren and many other extended family members, currently work at Long Beach Shavings, continuing the family business tradition to the fourth generation.
